Meet your Chief Krav Maga Instructor

Max McGregor

CKMA Founder and 3rd Dan Black Belt in Gendai Ryu Krav Maga and Jiu-Jitsu

Max McGregor founded Champions Krav Maga Academy in 2022. His purpose was simple, to help everyday people build practical self-defence skills in a community free from ego, intimidation, and false promises.

He is an Australian Defence Force veteran, 3rd Dan Black Belt and Senior Instructor in Gendai Ryu Krav Maga and Jiu-Jitsu, and the Brisbane Representative for the Federation of Israeli Martial Arts (FIMA). In 2026, he was awarded Krav Maga Instructor of the Year at the FIMA Training Awards Event in Phoenix, Arizona. The award is judged across FIMA’s entire international network, not limited to a single region or country.

His background spans Krav Maga, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, Judo, and mixed martial arts, with training completed in Israel and under respected leaders across the Krav Maga community.

Before founding CKMA, Max McGregor served in the Australian Army and worked as a frontline Transit Officer, where he was also a certified Operational Skills and Tactics Instructor trained through the Queensland Police Service. That background gave him a deep understanding of conflict, awareness, and how to apply practical skills in real-world situations. It also shaped the way he coaches, with structure, accountability, and a focus on what actually works under pressure.

Why train with me

My coaching approach

My coaching style is built around clear instruction, progressive learning, teamwork, and making every session engaging, purposeful, and enjoyable.

I believe great coaching starts with understanding the person in front of me. Every student comes in with different goals, challenges, strengths, and life experience. My role is to meet you where you are, coach you properly, and help you keep moving forward with confidence.

For me, training is about more than learning techniques. It is about helping you build practical skill, real confidence, resilience, and belief in yourself through structured coaching that brings out your best over time. I work hard to create a safe, supportive, and professional environment where students feel comfortable to learn, challenged to grow, and proud of the progress they make both on the mats and in everyday life.

Background

My experience

My expertise is built on more than 12 years of Krav Maga and martial arts training, combined with real-world experience gained through frontline service as a Transit Officer and in the Australian Army.

I was also an Operational Skills and Tactics Instructor, trained through the Queensland Police Service to deliver operational skills and tactics training to Transit Officers.

Together, these experiences developed my ability to stay composed under pressure, assess risk, manage conflict, and apply practical skills in dynamic situations. They also shaped the way I coach. I place a strong focus on structure, accountability, awareness, and helping students build self-defence skills that are practical, purposeful, and relevant beyond the mats.

This allows me to teach in a way that bridges the gap between martial arts training and real-world application.

Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy

For me, martial arts is about more than self-defence. It is a way to build confidence, resilience, discipline, and character through training that has real purpose.

I believe students progress best when they are taught with clarity, encouraged to think, and given skills that are simple, practical, and effective under pressure. That is why my approach focuses on education, violence prevention and management, clear instruction, and consistent practice. My goal is to help students develop real confidence, better composure, and the ability to handle everyday challenges with greater control and self-belief.

My journeyFrom the Army to the mats

My martial arts journey began during my time in the Australian Army. While in the Army, I trained in several martial arts styles but never found one that truly focused on realistic, practical self-defence. Everything felt controlled or missing key elements, effective in theory but out of touch with the realities of real-world violence.

That changed right before I left the Army, when I discovered Krav Maga.

It was simple, direct, and designed for real-life threats, not for sport or tradition. It felt real and exactly what I needed as I prepared to step into civilian life. I wanted to rebuild my confidence and develop practical skills that could keep me, my loved ones, and others safe in unpredictable situations.

When I left the Army, I was unsure about what came next. I had received some of the best training in the world, yet I still wrestled with self-doubt and not knowing where I fit outside that environment. The structure, purpose, and teamwork of military life had shaped my identity. Over the next few years of training, I started to realise Krav Maga was becoming my new mission, bringing back discipline, purpose, and a sense of community and belonging.

A big part of that change came from my instructor, Gavriel Schneider. From my very first class, I could tell he approached Krav Maga differently. He taught that self-defence was not just about fighting back, but about awareness, prevention, and understanding what happens before, during, and after violence. He showed me that real self-defence is proactive. It is about staying aware, making smart decisions, and remaining in control under pressure.

Training with him also made me realise how important it is to learn from the right Krav Maga instructor.

The right instructor truly understands all aspects of self-defence, the mindset behind it, and the responsibility that comes with teaching it, as well as the kind of community they build on the mats.

Under his guidance, Krav Maga became a true turning point in my life.

It stopped being just a set of techniques and became a path that challenged me to grow, lead, and help forge a community of like-minded individuals, all working to become safer, stronger, and more capable together.

Finding that sense of direction was only the beginning. Underneath that new purpose, the path itself was still tough.

Earning a Black Belt takes years of discipline, patience, and persistence. There were setbacks, injuries, and long stretches where progress felt slow or invisible.

Balancing training with work, family, and everyday life often tested my limits. Some nights I turned up exhausted. Other times I questioned whether I was actually getting better.

But I kept showing up.

Because deep down, I knew this journey was about more than belts or recognition. It was about who I was becoming in the process. Each session was a chance to step up and become stronger, more capable, and more resilient than the day before.

As the years went on, I kept pushing myself to grow. I travelled, trained with different instructors and martial arts, and tested what I had learned under pressure. Every seminar and camp deepened my understanding of Krav Maga, not just as a system of self-defence but as a way to think, move, and make decisions under stress.

That journey eventually led me to Israel, the home of Krav Maga, where I earned my Black Belt. Training there was intense, humbling, and eye-opening. It reminded me that true growth comes from stepping outside your comfort zone, letting go of ego, and choosing to remain a student, no matter what rank you wear.

That experience in Israel did not feel like a finish line. It felt like the start of a new chapter.

After earning my Black Belt in Israel, I began teaching Krav Maga and sharing what I had learned. As I stepped into that role, I started to understand that real progress was not just about what I could do under pressure, but what I could help others do.

In those early years as an Krav Maga instructor, I began to see that real growth happens when training is structured, educational, and focused on helping every student reach their potential.

I also started to draw on my military background, bringing a structured, progressive and practical approach into my classes. It helped students understand not just what to do, but why it worked. I wanted people to leave each class feeling more capable, more informed, and more confident in their ability to protect themselves and others.

Over time, I wanted to challenge myself further. I wanted to build something from the ground up that reflected my experience, values, and approach to teaching, while still honouring the Krav Maga system that changed my life.

That vision became Champions Krav Maga Academy, founded on the values of service, growth, community, and safety, a place where people can grow together through purposeful, structured training that helps each student move forward at their own pace.

Since opening in 2022, Champions Krav Maga Academy has become one of Brisbane’s most trusted Krav Maga communities. What began with a handful of students has grown into a strong, supportive community built on respect, effort, and shared progress.

Our students have transformed both physically and mentally, many losing over ten kilograms, gaining confidence, and developing the resilience to handle life’s challenges with strength and composure. Parents tell us their children have become more focused, disciplined, and self-assured. Adults share how training has helped them stay calm and in control, whether at work, at home, or in real-world situations.

Every success reminds me why this academy exists. It is here to empower everyday people with the skills, confidence, and mindset to live safer, stronger, and more capable lives.

This journey has been life-changing. It rebuilt my confidence, strengthened my resilience, and gave me a renewed sense of purpose.

Most of all, it showed me the power of community, how people grow faster, push harder, and go further when they feel they belong and support each other.

My mission now is simple. To help more everyday people experience that same confidence, capability, and sense of belonging through training that truly makes a difference.

Krav Maga Instructor

Sandy Taylor

Black Belt in Gendai Ryu Krav Maga and Jiu-Jitsu

Sandy Taylor began his Krav Maga training as a student in the Adult Krav Maga program at CKMA. He trained through the program, earned his Black Belt directly under Max McGregor, and completed the CKMA instructor development pathway before stepping into a coaching role across adult and youth programs.

That progression is not just a staffing note. It is proof of what the CKMA system produces. Sandy did not come in as a coach. He came in as a student, showed up consistently, did the work, and developed into an Krav Maga instructor who now coaches with the same values and standards he trained under.

His background also includes service in both the Australian and British Armed Forces, including multiple combat deployments to Iraq. He brings experience in boxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, rugby coaching, and leadership in high-pressure environments.

Why train with me

My coaching approach

My approach to coaching is built on clarity, teamwork, and making training practical and relevant from session one. I have led people in demanding military environments where composure, accountability, and good decision-making were not optional. That experience shaped how I think about coaching. Help people understand what they are doing, why it matters, and how to apply it when it counts.

I am an active student as well as an Krav Maga instructor. I continue to train in boxing, fitness, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, which keeps my skills current and my coaching grounded in what real progression feels like. Within the Gendai Ryu Krav Maga and Jiu-Jitsu system, I especially value the focus on threat awareness, practical response, and the responsible use of force. Those are the qualities I aim to build in every student I coach.

Background

My experience

My experience spans military leadership, combat deployments, contact sports, and coaching. During my service in the Australian and British Armed Forces, I led small, highly trained teams and managed larger groups in some of the most demanding environments a person can face. Those experiences reinforced what matters most under pressure. Awareness, discipline, and the ability to stay calm and make sound decisions.

I continue to compete and train actively in boxing and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, which gives me a current, practical perspective on physical performance and skill development that directly informs the way I coach.

Lena Bhavanam

Blue Belt in Gendai Ryu Krav Maga and Jiu-Jitsu

Lena Bhavanam began her Krav Maga path as a student in the Adult Krav Maga program at CKMA. She trained through the program, was selected for the CKMA instructor development pathway, and completed that process under Max’s direct guidance before becoming the lead instructor for Women’s Krav Maga.

That student-to-instructor progression shapes everything about how Lena coaches. She knows what it feels like to walk in with no experience. She knows the uncertainty that comes with the first few weeks of training. And she knows what consistent, structured coaching produces over time, because she has lived it.

Her background in fitness and strength and conditioning gives her a strong foundation in movement quality, injury awareness, and safe physical development. She is also completing specialised training in boundary setting under Randy King, which deepens her ability to teach situational awareness, verbal boundaries, and clear decision-making in the Women’s Krav Maga program.

Why train with me

My coaching approach

My focus is on creating a training environment where women feel capable, supported, and genuinely prepared. Effective self-defence starts well before physical technique is needed. It begins with understanding your value, knowing your boundaries, and having the confidence to hold them clearly. That belief shapes every class I run.

I coach both technique and context. Students learn physical skills alongside the awareness and decision-making that make those skills useful in real situations. Whether you are walking in for the first time or working toward a grading, my goal is the same. Help you leave each session feeling more capable and more confident than when you arrived.

Background

My experience

I train and coach within the Gendai Ryu Krav Maga and Jiu-Jitsu system and hold qualifications in fitness and strength and conditioning that help me guide students in a way that is safe, progressive, and physically well-structured. My understanding of how the body moves and responds under stress gives me a practical lens for helping students learn and improve without unnecessary injury risk.

My ongoing training in boundary setting through Randy King is building my ability to teach the psychological and social dimensions of self-defence, not just the physical ones. That means students in the Women’s Krav Maga program are developing a fuller picture of what safety and personal security look like in everyday life.

Will I be coached properly as a complete beginner?

Yes. Our Krav Maga instructors structure every class so beginners learn safely and progressively, with clear guidance and practical feedback from session one.

And both Coach Sandy and Coach Lena began as students here before being selected for the instructor pathway. They understand the student experience from the inside.
