Teen Martial Arts and Self-Defence Classes Brisbane for ages 11 to 17
You are not worried your teenager will go looking for trouble. You are worried about what happens when trouble finds them and you are not there. That they will panic. React before they think. Freeze when they need to move. Or make a decision in the moment that makes a bad situation significantly worse. That specific worry is what our martial arts for teens was built to address. At Champions Krav Maga Academy in Holland Park, teenagers aged 11 to 17 build practical self-defence for teens, real martial arts foundations, and the ability to make calm, smart decisions under pressure. Our self-defence classes for teens are taught through Teen Krav Maga, so every skill has a clear purpose.
Who our teen martial arts classes are for
These teen martial arts classes are for parents watching their teenager move through a world with real stakes. Public transport. Social pressure. Parties without adults present. Conflict that gets filmed and shared. Situations where a split-second decision carries consequences they will carry for years. You cannot be there for most of it. This training is.
It is a strong fit if your child:
- Complete beginners with no martial arts experience at all
- Quieter teens who freeze or go silent under social pressure
- Reactive teens who need a pause between the trigger and the response
- Teenagers becoming more independent than their capability has caught up with
- Teens who want to be taken seriously, not talked to like children
- Parents who want something concrete, not another activity that fades in a month
Students train in separate groups for ages 11 to 14 and 15 to 17, so the room always suits where your teenager actually is, socially and developmentally. Experience, fitness, and confidence are not requirements. The training builds all three.
What your teenager will learn in our teen martial arts classes
Every class follows a structured curriculum. Skills are taught progressively, in the right order, with the reason behind them explained. Nothing is random, and nothing is rushed.
The Youth Martial Arts Program is built on the Gendai Ryu Krav Maga and Jiu-Jitsu system, under the direction of CKMA founder Max McGregor, an Australian Defence Force veteran and 3rd Degree Black Belt.
Teen self-defence classes built for real situations
Awareness, reading a situation early, verbal de-escalation, creating space, and how to respond physically if there is no other option. Built for bullying that turns physical, pressure from the wrong crowd, being out without supervision, and conflict that moves between online and offline.
The legal and consequence framework
What happens before, during, and after a real incident, including the legal considerations. For a teenager, the biggest risk is often not the confrontation. It is the decision made in the moment. A teen who trains but does not understand this is only half prepared.
Age-appropriate martial arts foundations
Striking mechanics, movement, balance, control, safe partner work, and beginner grappling, with age-appropriate elements of boxing, kickboxing, Judo, and Jiu-Jitsu built in progressively. A connected pathway, not random techniques week to week.
Composure and decision-making under pressure
Impulse control, reading a room early, and staying regulated when something provokes them. Calm is a skill. It is trained. Parents see it in how their teenager handles difficult moments at home long before they see it on the mats.
What to expect in our teen martial arts classes
Your teenager does not need to be confident, fit, or experienced before their first session.
A consistent class structure
Every class follows the same clear format, so your teenager knows what is coming and settles quickly. Sessions open with movement, coordination, and reaction work, then move into self-defence and martial arts skills at their level.
Separate groups for 11 to 14 and 15 to 17
A thirteen year old and a sixteen year old are at very different stages, physically and socially. Splitting the groups means the coaching, the language, and the partner work always match where your teenager actually is, without the awkwardness of a room that does not feel built for them.
Coached as a young adult, not a child
The coaching explains the why behind every technique, not just the what. Teenagers who understand why something works engage with it completely differently. This is the single thing that decides whether a teen comes back.
A first class they will not regret
They are welcomed, shown how the class works, and coached at a beginner pace without being made to feel like the new person. You are welcome to observe, so you can see the coaching and the culture before making any decision.
Why parents choose CKMA for teen martial arts
Four things parents tell us made the decision feel safe.
Qualified, checked coaches
Every teen instructor holds a valid Blue Card, a Gendai Ryu instructor qualification, and passes CKMA’s own internal certification before stepping onto the mats.
The legal framework is part of the training
Most martial arts programs teach physical skills. We also teach what happens before, during, and after an incident. For a parent who wants smart decisions, not just capable ones, this is the point.
A culture without ego or dominance
No show-offs, no dominance games, no environment that rewards aggression. Respect and effort are the standard.
Coached as capable young adults
Teenagers are never talked down to. That respect is what makes them want to come back, and it is why most who try it choose to stay.

What Parents Say About Youth Krav Maga at CKMA
Meet the instructors behind our teen martial arts classes
With a teenager, the coach decides everything. Talk down to them once and they are gone. You are looking for someone credible, calm, and able to earn a teenager’s respect rather than demand it.
CKMA was founded by Max McGregor, an Australian Defence Force veteran and 3rd Degree Black Belt and Senior Instructor in Gendai Ryu Krav Maga and Jiu-Jitsu. He is the Brisbane Representative for the Federation of Israeli Martial Arts, holds a 3rd Degree Black Belt in Dennis Survival Ju-Jitsu, and brings over 12 years of coaching experience.
Every CKMA instructor is personally trained, vetted, and developed by Max to the same standard. Clear instruction. Safe partner work. The ability to meet a teen where they are and build from there without making them feel slow, behind, or out of place.
For you, that means peace of mind. Your teenager is training under coaches who are qualified, purposeful, and consistent from one session to the next.
You cannot walk beside them anymore. Training does not replace your presence. It extends your influence into every moment you cannot be in. Most teenagers who try this come back, not because a parent made them, but because they found something worth their time.
Teen martial arts classes Brisbane: FAQs
Is Teen Krav Maga suitable for a complete beginner?
Yes. Most teenagers start our martial arts for teens with no experience at all. The program brings beginners through step by step, at a pace that suits their age and stage. Your teenager does not need to be fit, confident, or coordinated to begin.
What age groups do you teach and how are they split?
Students are aged 11 to 17. Where possible, our self-defence classes for teens run in two groups, ages 11 to 14 and ages 15 to 17, so the coaching, drills, and partner work always suit where each student is developmentally and socially. To compare every program we run, see our martial arts classes in Brisbane and self-defence classes in Brisbane.
What if my teenager is reluctant to try something new?
This is the most common thing parents raise. The first class is built to be clear, worthwhile, and free of anything that would embarrass them. Teenagers are not talked to like children, and the coaching explains the why behind every drill. Most who try martial arts for teens here come back because they chose to.
Do you teach the legal side of self-defence?
Yes, and this is one of the things that separates CKMA. Teenagers learn what happens before, during, and after a real incident, including the legal considerations. For a teenager, the decision made in the moment often carries more risk than the confrontation itself. It is a core part of self-defence for teens, and most programs skip it.
Will the training make my teenager more aggressive?
No. The program is built around calm confidence and smart decision-making. Teenagers learn to de-escalate, create space, and make better choices under pressure. The goal is a teen who is harder to target and less reactive, not one who looks for conflict. Aggression is never tolerated or rewarded. Good self-defence classes for teens teach restraint first.
Can I watch the class?
Yes. Parents are welcome at all our teen martial arts classes, especially the first session. It gives you a clear picture of the coaching, how the teenagers engage, and whether the culture suits your child. Most parents find it removes more doubt than anything else could.
What should my teenager bring?
Comfortable training clothes and a water bottle. The coaching team walks you through everything else, including next steps, before you leave.
