Previous Krav Maga or martial arts Experience? Find the right place to start.
You may have trained in Krav Maga, boxing, Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, judo, wrestling, MMA, or another martial art. You may also be returning after time away.
At CKMA, your previous experience is respected. Every student still starts in the right place for their current ability, goals, and safety.
Whether you are an experienced adult, an adult coming back after a break, or a parent of a child who has trained before, choose the tab below that fits you.
Is this the right starting point for you?
This tab is for adults with previous Krav Maga or martial arts training, and for adults returning to training after time away.
You have trained Martial Arts before
You may have trained in Krav Maga, boxing, Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, judo, wrestling, MMA, or another martial art. Your background may give you useful fitness, timing, control, discipline, movement, and confidence.
Every academy teaches differently. That is why we look at your current skill, training habits, safety, and goals before recommending your next step.
You are returning after time away
You trained in the past and want to return with structure. You may want to rebuild confidence, improve fitness, sharpen your skills, or get back into consistent training.
You do not need to prove yourself on day one. At CKMA, you restart with clear coaching, safe progression, and a pathway that helps you build forward.
Where students with previous training start at CKMA
Your starting point depends on your background, current ability, and goals. We do not place students by rank, years trained, or confidence alone. We protect the safety, structure, and standard of each class.
Adult Beginner Krav Maga
Most adults with previous experience start here. This is not a step backwards. It is the best way to learn how CKMA teaches, understand our system, and identify your current strengths and gaps.
You build or refine practical self-defence, movement, striking, defensive reactions, timing, awareness, control, and safe partner training habits. This foundation prepares you for more advanced or higher-pressure training later.
Champions MMA for broader development
Adults may also train in Champions MMA as part of their wider development. It supports Krav Maga by developing striking, clinch work, takedowns, ground skills, and controlled partner training, helping you become more capable across different ranges.
The goal is not fight culture. It is practical growth, safer training, and broader martial arts capability.
Advanced Krav Maga requires White Belt Stripe 2
Advanced Krav Maga is not the starting point for new CKMA students. To join, you must first achieve White Belt Stripe 2 in the CKMA system. This standard protects safety, training quality, and the level of the class.
Advanced training includes more pressure, complexity, and higher demands. Even if you have trained before, we guide you through the CKMA pathway first.
Why experienced students choose CKMA
Experienced students with previous martial arts training often want training that respects their background while still giving them structure, safety, and room to grow.
Your previous experience is respected
Your training matters. It may have given you useful skills in striking, grappling, fitness, movement, discipline, or pressure. It may also have left gaps. Some students have strong striking but limited ground skills. Others have grappling experience but need better awareness, movement, or self-defence decision-making. We respect what you bring and help you build what comes next.
Training follows a clear structure
CKMA is a values-led self-defence and martial arts academy. Our training follows a clear structure, so you know what you are learning, why it matters, and how it connects to the wider pathway. Your training should not feel random. You build practical self-defence, striking, clinch skills, ground defence, pressure management, and safer training habits over time.
Growth is built into the pathway
Growth is one of CKMA’s core values. Students progress in a steady, safe, and realistic way. You do not need to prove yourself on day one. Instead, you learn the CKMA system, build trust with training partners, and progress through clear standards. This helps experienced students adjust without ego, pressure, or guesswork.
You build practical, well-rounded capability
CKMA puts practical self-defence first. Over time, you also develop broader martial arts skills through striking, clinch work, takedowns, ground skills, and controlled partner training. You are not just collecting techniques. You are building useful skill, safer habits, and more confidence under pressure.
FAQ: adults with previous training
Where should adults with previous training start?
Most adults with previous martial arts training start in our Adult Beginner Krav Maga Classes. This helps you learn the CKMA system, understand our standards, and build the right foundation for future progression.
Is Adult Beginner Krav Maga too basic if I have trained before?
Not usually. The goal is not to ignore your experience. It is to help you understand the CKMA system, refine your foundations, and identify where you fit in the pathway.
Can I start in Advanced Krav Maga if I have trained elsewhere?
No. New CKMA students need to achieve White Belt Stripe 2 before joining Adult Advanced Krav Maga. This keeps training safer and protects the standard of the class.
Can I train in Champions MMA if I have previous experience?
Yes. Adults may train in Champions MMA as part of their wider development. This can help you improve striking, clinch work, takedowns, ground skills, and controlled partner training.
What if I have not trained for years?
That is fine. Many adults return after time away. We help you rebuild safely through structured coaching, practical training, and clear progression.

You do not need to guess where you fit.
Has your child trained before?
This tab is for parents whose child or teen has previous martial arts experience and is looking for the right place to continue at CKMA.
Your child or teen has trained before
If your child or teen has previous martial arts experience, CKMA can help them continue training safely. We consider their age, maturity, confidence, listening skills, movement, and development.
This helps young students train in the right class while still being challenged at the right level. We do not place children into advanced streams based only on belts or training history from another school.
Where kids and teens with previous training start
We coach each student within the right age group, then adjust support based on maturity, confidence, movement, listening skills, and development. This helps children and teens train safely while still being challenged.
Kids Krav Maga
Kids with previous experience start in their age-based Kids Krav Maga class. The program is structured, encouraging, and built specifically for this age group. Classes run twice a week after school.
Teen Krav Maga
Teens with previous experience start in their age-based Teen Krav Maga class, where training progresses into more applied self-defence and situational decision-making. Classes run twice a week after school.
Why parents of experienced children choose CKMA
Parents want training that respects what their child already knows while keeping them safe and challenged at the right level.
Placement based on the child, not just a belt
We do not place children into advanced streams based only on belts or training history from another school. Instead, we coach each student within the right age group, then adjust support based on maturity, confidence, movement, listening skills, and development.
Age-appropriate programs with no cross-over
CKMA runs fully separate programs for kids aged 6 to 10 and teens aged 11 to 17. The curriculum, coaching style, and class culture are built for each age group specifically, not adapted from a single adult program.
A coaching culture built on safety and respect
CKMA’s values are Service, Growth, Community, and Safety. The goal is a child who is confident without being aggressive and capable without being reckless. That distinction matters to most parents and it is built into how we coach.
A system your child can grow with
The youth programs are built around long-term development, with a structured curriculum, clear progression milestones, and grading pathways that keep training purposeful as your child’s ability grows.
FAQ: children with previous training
Will my child be bored if they have already trained?
Unlikely. The CKMA curriculum introduces material, principles, and skills that are specific to the Gendai Ryu system. Children with prior training usually find that the reasoning framework, the integration of multiple pillars, and the coaching approach are genuinely different from what they experienced before. The physical foundation they bring means they can access the deeper material faster, not that they will repeat what they already know.
Will they be in class with children who have never trained before?
Yes, in most cases. The coaching team structures sessions to challenge students at different levels within the same class. Children with prior experience often become an asset to the class environment rather than being held back by it.
My teenager trained before and quit. How is this different?
The most common reason teenagers leave martial arts programs is culture mismatch, not lack of interest. They found the environment childish, the coaching dismissive, or the room socially closed. The CKMA teen program is built around treating teenagers with respect, explaining the why behind every skill, and creating a culture where teenagers genuinely want to come back. The free intro class is the clearest way to let your teenager assess the environment themselves before committing. Visit our Teen Krav Maga Classes page for full program detail.
Is there a guide to help me compare Krav Maga with my child's previous martial art?
Find your child's right starting point.
You do not need to guess where they fit. Book a free intro class and our team will guide you to the right class for your child.
Meet the Krav Maga instructors behind CKMA
CKMA was founded by Max McGregor, an Australian Defence Force veteran and 3rd Degree Black Belt and Senior Instructor in Gendai Ryu Krav Maga and Jiu-Jitsu. Max is the Brisbane Representative for the Federation of Israeli Martial Arts (FIMA), a 3rd Degree Black Belt in Dennis Survival Ju-Jitsu, a Blue Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and has over 12 years of Krav Maga and martial arts experience.
All CKMA instructors are personally trained, vetted, and developed by Max. Each instructor is developed to coach the CKMA way, with a strong focus on practical self-defence, clear explanations, safe partner work, structured progression, and real skill development.
This matters if you have trained before. Experienced students need coaches who can assess movement, explain standards, identify gaps, and guide them into the right pathway. Our coaching culture is built around safety, structure, practical outcomes, and high standards. We help everyday people become safer, stronger, and more capable without ego, intimidation, or false promises.
